Gel Plate Printing and Collage Workshop
Two-Step with Laurie Churchill
May 5 and 7, 2026 – 2-5 PM
In two steps we explore the basics of using a gel plate to make colorful, textured prints that we will then incorporate into collages, ready for framing.
Step One. In the first session, learn the principles of gel plate printing—using acrylic paint in various color combinations and adding textures and shapes for interesting design elements. For added effects, incorporate magazine images and /or photographs to your prints.
Step Two. In the second session, learn how to use a variety of ephemera, in addition to your gel prints, to construct three 5X7” collages suitable for framing. Also learn some of principles of design, such as repetition, variety of materials, color palette, contrast, and shape. Each of these elements will contribute to the visual impact of your collages.
The cost of the two, three-hour classes is $250 (plus tax).
I provide all materials for this creative two-step: a 5 X 7” gel plate and brayer (yours to keep); a variety of printing paper (e.g., rice, tissue, and mulberry paper); ephemera, including postage stamps, images from magazines and vintage valentines; acrylic paints; gel medium; stencils and masks; paper; scissors; utility knives; three mats with backing and protective sleeves for your finished collages. Please bring an apron and your dancing shoes!
Both workshop sessions meet in my home studio and are limited to 4 participants.
A $50.00 non-refundable deposit will reserve your space. The $200.00 balance (plus tax) is due on the first day of class. Repeat participants who bring their own gel-plate and brayer receive a 10% discount. I accept cash, checks, or Venmo.

Let’s Take a Stitch for a Walk
Workshop on Slow Stitching and Textile Collage with Laurie Churchill
May 18 and 20, 2026 – 2-5 PM

Hesperides (textile collage, 2022)
Paul Klee, in referring to drawing practice, described a line as “a dot that went for a walk.” In this workshop you will take stitches for a walk to create a textile collage (aka improv quilt). Join me to experience the joyful calm of slow stitching and the delight of designing as you go–without patterns or templates or the need to measure or match seams. No experience necessary; you can make an exquisite textile collage using only the easiest stitch of all: the running, or should I say walking, stitch.
In two, three-hour-sessions, practice basic embroidery stitches and explore the possibilities for embellishing a fabric background that will become your unique creation. This exploration begins with a 16×16 inch muslin square, to which you will apply fabric scraps, an array of stitches made with threads of various colors and thicknesses, and, perhaps, ephemera (e.g., buttons, beads, charms, lace, feathers, shells, or an orphan earring). You will rely on your creative sense in the moment to mark your journey in cloth.
I provide all materials: muslin, batting and backing, fabric scraps, embroidery threads, needles, thimbles, hoops, and some ephemera. Feel free to bring favorite fabrics, threads and other embellishments from your stash to add to the mix.
The cost is $250 plus tax. Enrollment is limited to 4 participants. For more information, contact me at 575-639-3793 or lottebiondi@gmail.com and visit my website at: lottebiondi.com.
